And why again are conservative, straight, white, middle-aged males not a threat to society?

So there was another church shooting.

But this was not just any church. This was a Unitarian Universalist Church. Right, the folks who accept pretty much everybody with love, who feed the hungry, shelter refugees, stand up for free speech, support equal rights for queer folks and women and racial minorities. They were in the middle of a children’s play, for cryin’ out loud. God have mercy.

And this was no ordinary shooter. This was a middle-aged, straight, white, conservative male.

Excuse me for “profiling,” but I’d be a fool to not notice and care that this is how conservative, elite males are normed into society: to always blame someone else, to take their frustration out on other, weaker people, to turn to violence when they face hardship. I’d be a self-hating fool to not be scared and outraged by this.

He bought into the hateful homophobic rhetoric that passes as theology in conservative churches these days. He couldn’t stand that some people in some church no one was making him join were tolerant and happy. He wanted to punish people at the church that had made local news for being welcoming to gays and lesbians and for hosting PFLAG meetings.

He attacked the church as a way to lash out against liberal movement “ruining the country.” Killer Jim Adkisson told a police officer that if “he could not get to the leaders of the liberal movement that he would then target those that had voted them in to office.”

This was a bona fide hate crime against liberals. LIBERALS. Our political identity is now clearly a basis for discrimination and oppression (and if you think this is the first time this has happened to liberals, study Pinochet’s Chile or histories of the labor movements in this country).

This killer was under economic pressure. He was frustrated because he was out of work. And he took it out on those he saw as liberals.

Too bad it’s the conservative oil men and bankers who have ruined the economy. Too bad it’s the filthy rich neo-cons who couldn’t care less if his job gets shipped overseas, if his union is broken, if his country shirks its responsibility to provide decent health care for its citizens. Too bad the people who actually brought about his frustrating situation will likely not notice and certainly not change the way they run the world in any single way that would make life any better for someone like him.

Too bad his murders will only make life harder for the very people who could make his life easier. Bad, bad for us. Very bad for us who already fight an uphill battle to end the death-dealing Empire and supplant it with life-giving Resurrection. Now the very co-beneficiaries of our struggle are coming after us.

Maybe, just maybe, there really are “bitter” people out there who “cling to guns.” Maybe they don’t cling to religion like we thought. Maybe we’re not being “elitist” by point this out, but rather we’re engaging in self-defense. Maybe our political action for economic justice and an end to the causes of such bitterness is self-defense, too.

The only thing he got his politics right on was the guns: if we had power in this country, we liberals would have passed gun-control laws that might have prevented someone like him from murdering people like us. How silly of us.

Take note, my friends. It has always been dangerous to be prophetic, to stand up for justice, to live out the Kin-dom of God no matter what the Powers say and threaten and do. But it’s clearly not getting any easier.

Be brave, friends. Mourn, and be brave. We still have so much work to do.

Welcome, First Cousin Once Removed!

Baby Ryan Marcus is now of this world!  Congratulations, mom Karin, dad Gerard, and grandma Rita!  We on this side of the Atlantic are looking forward to meeting Ryan soon.

And, yes, his shirt says “Handsome, just like daddy.”

So funny it hurts.

Hello from Richmond!

Greetings!  Ken Miller Rieman and I are enjoying the internet cafe at the Richmond Convention Center!  It is cool!

World’s Oldest Blogger Dies

An 108-year-old Australian woman who just passed away was the self-proclaimed world’s oldest blogger.   On her weblog of the same name, Olive Riley recorded stories she recalled from her earlier years as well as her experiences in the hospital during her last days.

Reading this makes me wish more of our elders blogged so we could record their valuable stories, too; I suppose that’s one blessing of blogging for those of my generation, that we will have some record of the events and thoughts that sparked our interest when we look back at this time of our lives.  Remember, whoever you are, your story matters!

Mmmmm, Adventism

Is this not one of the finest super heroes you have ever seen (below)? To read more about him or to see other caricatures of famous Adventists, visit the blog that “exaggerates the contours of Adventism.” Or just gaze upon the superior beauty that is Captain Spectrum.

Happy Fourth of July

Seriously, I am pretty patriotic about this country. I really do love America, especially the United States of it. What I love is the people, the land, the stories that have taken place here. I would not want to live anywhere else. (And Barack Obama’s helping me feel that way all the more.)

I know this is a bit of a challenge to my Brethren principles (before 1820, we were banned by Annual Meeting from celebrating in Independence Day festivities, a rule that has since been slackened). I do take this caution induced by my Christian background into my celebrations of this country, especially the warning pacifism offers to remind us of the limits of national pride.*

But I sure do like the fireworks. And watching them on the Berkeley Marina, staring out over the amazing San Francisco Bay, with the vast ocean beyond it, sitting together with all walks of life, with immigrant families and Hare Krishna bands and my crazy collection of seminary and college friends and everyone else, is exactly what the USA is all about and it’s exactly what I love about this country.

Oh, that and cheesy music:

* On limits of national pride:

So, except for that, and some other stuff, I really, really love my country!

P.S. Did you know that the word “country” comes from the same roots as the word “cunt?” Even more reason to love it!

Preemptive strikes?

I don’t know enough background to this at all, but it just doesn’t seem right. The BBC reports:

Chadian troops have killed more than 60 followers of a Muslim spiritual leader who threatened to launch a holy war, the country’s security minister said.

More than 50 others were wounded in fighting that broke out after troops surrounded Ahmat Israel Bichara’s base in the south of the country.

Four soldiers were killed as the Muslim holy man’s disciples fought back with swords, spears and bows.

The little-known spiritual leader had declared he was ready to fight to restore what he saw as the true Islamic faith in Chad, officials said.

The fighting at Kouno, 300km (185 miles) south-east of the capital, N’Djamena, reportedly broke out when they tried to stop him preaching.

“It’s a regrettable toll, but we think we now control the situation caused by the actions carried out by these terrorists, these extremists,” Reuters news agency quoted Mr Bachir as saying.

Sixty people without serious weapons killed during a worship service/rally? Yes, I’m sure they are easier to control once most of them are dead, but that doesn’t quite make it right, does it?

At the same time, we know what danger James Kony and the LRA have caused and are causing over in East Africa, so the threat of ‘religious’ militants is great. But how can this threat be clearly and certainly perceived into the future?
