Happy Republicaning

In Rolling Stone magazine a few weeks ago, Matt Taibbi wrote a good explanation of John McCain and his natural disinclination toward the conservative ‘Christianity’ that has buoyed his party to ascendancy in recent decades, specifically how (poorly) he fits into the cooperation/tug-of-war between the two elements of the party, the religious right and the neo-conservatives (both of which perverts their original principles). I said during the primaries that each of the major candidates represented one of the different core strands of the Republican party (Romney the economic-business platform; McCain the security hawkishness; Huckabee the religious wing(nuts); Giuliani the East Coast elites; Thompsen the Hollywood hero worship) but none of them combined all the elements. McCain’s won out (despite his ineptitude at actually representing the other groups well), though as much because of mutual detestation among the others as because of love for him. And now he’s again gaining support more because others dislike Obama than because anyone likes McCain. Taibbi particularly shows how poor McCain is at lying and pretending to cover up his disgust with other strains. As the GOP Convention unfolds, it will be interesting to see how this all plays out…

Seafood Watch on Your Phone

Just visiting the Monterey Bay Aquarium website to keep up on my marine health activism here, and I discovered this great novelty: now the aquarium offers its famously useful pocket guide to the healthiest seafood on your mobile phone. For those of you pescatarins, the guide suggests which kinds of seafood are best for you and the fishies, in three categories, with different guides specific to each region of the country. You can also download the paper copy online, if you can’t get out to the Monterey Bay yourself.

Enjoy your summertime strolls along the ocean or other waterways or wherever you’re eating your fishy culinary delights, and be sure to think of me soaking up the sun on the Oaxacan Coast!

This chart illustrates quite effectively why I don’t eat as much fruit as I should, except that I’d elevate tomatoes and grapefruits up the tasty axis.
