The front page of the LA Times is covering the story of the odd choice of back drop for McCain’s acceptance speech last night. (For my initial comments on the matter, see my post below.)
The article offers some amusing analysis from the Walter Reed middle schoolers themselves – apparently the whole school was buzzing over their unexpected fame. The article also includes statements of disgust from local parents, staff, and community members:
Tamar Galatzan, who represents the North Hollywood area on the Los Angeles Board of Education, …said she was “flattered that Sen. McCain chose to use a school from my district as backdrop to his remarks” but that more federal resources for education seems “not a priority for the McCain/Palin ticket.”
One of the funniest lines comes from a history teacher at the school, David Graham, who used the moment of infamy to direct students’ attention to lessons about political science, and, well, basic research skills. Said Graham,
“They wanted to know why their school was featured. We talked in class about the importance of research and how you don’t just use the first thing you Google on the computer.”

Funny stuff….
So if you, (unlike me, sadly) were watching McCain’s speech last night at the RNC and you wondered what that massive mansion-like building behind him during the first minutes was, then I’ve got a little answer for you: No, it wasn’t one of McCain’s seven homes. It was Walter Reed Middle School in Hollywood, California.
Why was this image used, you might ask? What significance does this school have in the life of McCain or Republicans in general? Was this the school McCain himself attended? (No, it wasn’t.) Was it posted just to keep people interested through the speech of a mediocre orator, keep them guessing their image trivia knowledge in order to stay focused on the stage? (Maybe.)
And doesn’t that middle school have a name remarkably similar to another institution, more common in the daily lexicon of politicos and the public – that of Walter Reed Medical Center, the infamous hospital where veterans have been treated to the finest the Republican Commander-in-Chief’s resources had to offer, which wasn’t much? (Yes, it does.)
It turns out that the man who designed the slideshow for the backdrop behind McCain during his RNC speech was supposed to show a picture of Walter Reed…. Medical Center. So he did what many of us would do on a school project or family slideshow: he googled it. And found Walter Reed Middle School. And used a picture of it. And now he will never, ever, have a job in IT again.
(Good to know that Republican fact-checkers are on top of things, pay attention to detail – that sort of thing.)
More of the scoop over here and the pictures are here.
